This is the will and inventory of Anthony Badgley b. 1733 d. 30 Jun 1803
Married Anne Woodruff da. of Jonathan Woodruff & Jannet Magie
The will is recorded in Book A of Wills for Essex County Pages 24 & 25
Transcribed by me (Joan C. Small) as accurately as possible:
Essex County JS William Coles one of the appraisers to the within
Inventory being duly sworn according to law did dispose and say that the
several goods chattels and credits in the said inventory set down and
specified were by him appraised according to the just and true
respective rate and values after the best of his judgement and
understanding and that Jonathan Woodruff the other subscribing appraiser
was present at the same time and consented in all things to the doing
thereof and that they appraised all things brought to their view for
appraisment-

Badgley dece’d being duly sworn according to law did depose and say that
the within writing contain a true and perfect Inventory of all and
singular the good chattles and credits of said deceased as far as have
come to their knowledge or possession or to the possession of any other
person or persons for their use——

Westfield in the County of Essex deceased made by us whose Names are

Essex County Js: William coles one of the witnesses to the within will
being duly sworn according to Law did depose and say that the said
Anthony Badgeley the Testaator therein named sign and seal the same I
heard him publish pronounce & declare the within writing to be his last
will and tesament, & at the doing thereof the said Testator was of sound
and disposing mind and memory as far as this deposient knows & as all
the other subscribing evidences were present at the same time & signed
their names as witnesses to the said will together with this deposient
in the prescence of the said Testator— William Coles

Executors in the within testament named being duly sworn did depose and
say that the within writing contains the true last will & testament of
Anthony Badgley the Testator therein names as far as they know and as
they verily believe, & that they will well & truly perform the same by
paying first the debts of said dec_ & then the Legacies in the said
Testament specified so far as the good chattels & credits of said
deceased can thereunto extend & that they will make and exhibit into the
Surrogates Office, of the County of Essex a true & perfect Inventory of
the said goods chattels & credits & render a just & true account when
thereunto lawfully required—

Jonathan ? Dayton, joining Jacob Clark and the Widow Jane Badgley, and a
certain Piece which was left to me by my Hon-d Father James Badgley
joining the Road, Stephen Clark and Samuel Badgley: which two Pieces of
Land I devise to my —-? Anthony Badgley his Heirs & Assigns forever.
It give to my Grand Daughter Abigail Dotey, the Sum of fifteen Pounds,
in Money as aforesaid, to be paid unto her withing one year next after
my decease, out of my Moveable Estate, by my Executors or either of
them. All the Remainder of my Moveable Estate, I give to my three said
Daughters, Mary Maxwell, Jane Hole, and Anna Frazee, to be equally
divided among them three. And I do hereby make my above said three Sons
Jonathan Badgley, Anthony Badgley and Samuel Badgley Executors to this
my last Will and Testament. I do also, disannul all former Wills by me
at any time before this made. And I do confirm this and no other to be
my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof the Testator Anthony
Badgley Senior, have hereunto set my Hand and Seal the Date herein first
above written. Signed, sealed, pronounced and declared by the Testator

In the Name of GOD, Amen. The twenty-ninth Day of June, in the Year of
our LORD, One Thousand, seven Hundred and Ninety-nine. I Anthony Badgley
Senior, of the Township of Westfield, County of Essex and State of New
Jersey, Yoeman. Being in my sound Mind and disposing Memory, Thanks be
give to GOD for the —-?. And knowing that it is appointed for Man once
to die, and the Time when very uncertain, do make this my last Will and
Testament. First, I order that all my just debts and funeral Expences
be paid out of my Moveable Estate. then after my just Debts and Funeral
Expences are paid, I give to my beloved Wife Anna Badgley, the one-equal
Third Part of my Moveable Estate for her to use and dispose of as she
pleases. Also, I give to my said Wife, besides the Third Part of my
Moveable Estate, A Bed and Reasonable Furniture. And where as I have
given to my Son Anathony Badgley a Deed for Six Acres and three Tenths
of an Acre of Land, containing the House I know live in; my Barn,V-? I
give to my said Wife, the Use of one Third Part of all the Rest of my
Lands, for her to enjoy while she remains my Widow; but, if she marries
again, her Right to my said Land shall cease And, if my Wife, accepts or
takes what I have given her in this my Will, or any Part of what I have
given her, it shall be in full her right of Dower and Power of Thirds,
of, in, and to my Estate. Then I give, devise and bequeath to my two
Sons Jonathan Badgley and Samuel Badgley, All that certain Land which
was left to me by my Hon-d Father James Badgley. decs-d which Land joins
my said Son Jonathan’s Land he now lives on; and also, that contain
Piece of Land which I purchased of Thomas Nixon, which also joins my
said Son Jonathan’s Land he now lives on. Tbe equally divided between
my two said Sons Jonathan and Samuel, in Quantity and Quality; and shall
be to them their Heirs and Assigns forever. then I give, devise and
bequeath, to my said Son Anthony Badgley and to his Heir and Assigns
forever, All the Rest of my Homestead Place I now live on, besides what
I have given Him in Deed for. But it is my Will, and I order that my
said Son Anthony Badgley, shall pay to my said Son Samuel Badgley, the
sum of twenty Pounds, in Dollars at Eight Shillings each; and to my
Daughter Mary Maxwell, the Sum of Ten Pounds, in Dollars at Eight
Shillings each; and to my Daughter Jane Hole, the Sum of Ten Pounds, in
Dollars at Eight Shillings each; and to my Daaughter Anna Frazee, the
Sum of Ten Pounds, in Dollars at Eight Shillings each. All which
Legacies shall be paid within one Year next after my Decease: And, if my
said Son Anthon Badgley, refuse, or neglect to pay the above Legacies,
or any Part of them, Then I empower my Executors, or either of them, to
sell so much of the Land I have given to Him, as shall pay that
Deficiency with all the ————?: And I confirm such Sale, if any
such there be, strong and Effectual in the Law. I also, give to my said
Son Anthony Badgley, to him his Heirs and Assigns forever, That certain
Land which I purchased of —–?(It looks like Doc-r Jonathan) and it
is at the bottom of the last page.
