George Cannon School ~ Midway Island
George Cannon School on Midway Island…
First Grade Class of ’60-’61
That’s where I finished out the first grade. Being only six, most of my memories of the Navy Base on Midway Island, have been bolstered by the stories of my parents and the photos I have of that time.
Unfortunately, I don’t remember a single classmate, nor do I remember the teacher’s name. I wonder if the teachers were civilian contractors or were they dependents, that also had a teaching credential? If they were civilians, did they come there with their families or were they all single?
I hope that my classmates will see themselves and point out where they are in the photo and add their memories of that most wonderful of places–Midway Island!
I went to George Cannon school
From 1960 to 1962. One of the best times of my life at 16yrs old.
Wonderful memories.
Hi Shirley, So sorry for taking so long to answer your comment. Who were your parents, I wonder if they knew mine? Do you know about the two Midway Island sites on Facebook: “I attended George Cannon School on Midway Island US Navy Base and Midway Island Residents (Past and Present)? Everyone shares all the “wonderful memories” we all have of Midway. Thank you for coming to my site and commenting too.
Aloha, Leilani
I was a freshman at George Cannon from 1960-1961. Mr.Hoag was the coach and Mrs. Osterberg (spelling may be incorrect) was my main teacher. My brother was also there. Have been at the midway site but they appeared to ave removed the school page. Probably the best part of my school life. Really enjoyed it.
Hi Donald,
I was in 1st grade at that time, so we prolly didn’t travel in the same circles. I checked and the group on Facebook called “I attended George Cannon School on Midway Island US Navy base” link here—> https://www.facebook.com/groups/13401491733 is still active. There are more people in your age bracket than mine…it seems to me. Hope you’re able to connect with some old school chums. Thanks so much for you comment! Aloha, Leilani
I believe I was in your first grade class. My family arrived on Midway March 17, 1961. I don’t remember the first grade teachers name. In the second grade I had Mrs. Fraga. Do you remember the Barcroft twins, Donna and Donald? Our dads were station together at Moffett Field in California when we were in junior high. We remembered each other from Midway Island.
