Dorothy was Shirley's mother) indicates that Antoine left home at the age of 16, he was a fur trader...a "Voyager" for Daniel Abbott on Mackinaw Island, in 1808 he went to Milwaukee and traded for furs with the Indians there. This is where the Indian Chief names, Souligny come in also. The name Souligny is mentioned in the War of 1812. Shirley didn't mention the specific source for the 1812 info, but she did give Bev Uhren at Bjuhren@aol.com; the name of two books...Menominee Indians ---A History by Patricia K. Ourada and Atlas of Great Lakes Indians by Helen Hornbeck. Years passed, then there was mention of a trading post in ADA township at Grand Rapids Michigan. One or both of these books show Beauchamps as traders and names someone named John Beauchamp, a half breed, as defacto Chief. At Sombra, Canada, across the river from Marine City, Antoine owned some land, which he later sold to Francois Papineau, his son in law, who ws married to Antoines daughter Marguerite. Ny note says, "Francis drowned". Joseph Beacham lived in Lambdon County, Ontario. Shirley's Great Grandpa William called her great grand mother "Squaw" and Eliza said there was Indian in her husband's family. Mary Beauchamp Allen, Shirley's grandmother, had a cousin who looked very much like an Indian. Shirley said that she had been "adopted" by a Chippewa Indian woman, who used to take her to pow wows.
