I have a note in Ben's wife's file that says her death cert has her father as Nicholas Westcott

I have his affidavit for his civil war pension as of Aug 2012, he says his wife was Sarah Smith.

Civil War -

Benjamin's kid brother, Charles, joined the 23rd Michigan Infantry Regiment the day it was formed it would appear, His enlistment date is Aug 9 1862 at Saginaw, MI as a Private and the regimental records show that the unit was organized Sep 13 1862 at East Saginaw, MI.

Charles died of disease while serving in 23rd Infantry (Michigan) on Jan 1st 1863 at Bowling Green, KY and was interred at the National Cemetery in Nashville.

I don't know if Benjamin knew of his brothers death when he is listed on a draft census in June of 1863 as a farmer in Genesee Township, Genesee County Michigan, or when Ben enlisted in the 23rd Infantry on Sep 1st 1864 at Flint, Michigan as a Private, which is the date that Atlanta fell to Sherman which the 23rd was engaged in.

Ben is mustered out of the 23rd Infantry the day the unit is disbanded, June 28, 1865 at Salisbury, North Carolina.
