HOISINGTON, Charlena Elizabeth ? of Flint, 101 years young, went to meet her Lord on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Per the desire of Mrs. Hoisington, there will only be a private family graveside service at Sunset Hills Cemetery at 11 AM Saturday, August 7, 2010, Rev. Dale Woods officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vocational Independence Program (VIP), G-5064 Van Slyke Rd., Flint, 48507.
Charlena was born in Gladwin, MI on October 23, 1908, daughter of the late Rev. Charles H. and Ella Mae (Letts) Woods. She was the second of seven children.
Charlena was a teacher for 32 years, starting in the Beecher School District and then the Flint School District at Cook Elementary School and Potter Elementary School. She was an accomplished pianist with her favorite songs being, ?Amazing Grace? and ?What a friend we have in Jesus?.
Charlena was instrumental in the development of the Genesee County Association for Retarded Citizens and served as the President and Secretary in the early years of its growth.
Charlena will be greatly missed and leaves behind to cherish her memories, brother, Rev. Dale (Betty) Woods; son-in-law, Jerry Mawhinney; grandson, Robert (Sarah) Mawhinney; granddaughters, Laura Mawhinney, Melissa (Robert) Soule, Elizabeth (Christopher) Ward; great-grandsons, Travis, Brandon and Matthew Mawhinney, Benjamin Soule, Jacob and Tyler Ward; good friends, Donald and Virginia Evans. Charlena had three husbands, William Clare Spears, Foster Sayers and William Hoisington, all who predeceased her in death. Her daughters also preceded her in death, Jane Louise Spears in 1993 and Mary Elizabeth Mawhinney in November of 2009. Please share your thoughts with the family at www.allenfuneralhomeinc.com.
